Series II Artist Trading Cards

Admittedly, these are not entirely new. I created the drawings for this Artist Trading Card Print Pack series quite some time ago, but I only recently motivated myself to compile the drawings into a neat little set of prints. Artist trading cards are something I create often; the originals are perfect little gifts to include with thank-you cards, and because they are baseball-card-size I don't feel awkward about burdening someone with a piece of gigantic art that they might not like. Oh, thanks, it's...so great...I will allow this to take up space in my closet forever and feel obligated to never throw it away. No one wants that, and no art is for everyone.

Although normally I just draw whatever comes into my mind at the moment my pen touches the paper, many of these cards were intended for specific people or to capture an exact observation. Here are my three favorites:

My brother Luke takes magnificent photos, and his pictures of power lines have always been my favorite.  I drew this Artist Trading Card for Luke based on one of his brilliant photos. Power lines are one of my favorite subjects to draw--they are an unchanging thread running through the world, cutting deep trenches in forests and creating fascinating networks of line. Few man-made creations are as beautiful as an electric pole spilling over with a messy slew of errant wires and mystery boxes.

Whenever there are airplane cloud trails across the sky, I know my buddy Nik is having a good day. Nik flies airplanes and tells other airplanes where to go, which to me means that he is a professional adventurer. I imagine that one day he will invent a personal rocket ship and explore outer space with his loved ones and his loved animals, and they will inhabit a glorious new planet. 

Down the street from our old apartment in Tampa, a towering  apartment building was being torn down. Because of the closeness to other buildings and the proximity to sink holes, explosives were deemed too dangerous to use. Every day for a month, a massive wrecking ball struck the tower over and over. It was fascinating to watch--huge chunks of concrete and metal crashed to the ground below over time, but it was clear that a wrecking ball was not the ideal way to dismantle such a structure. The weight often seemed to make no impact on the building at all.
